Acne is caused by blocked skin pores and accumulated dirt. To avoid persistent acne trouble, make sure you wash your face well before going to bed. Remove all makeup and avoid using too much of soaps. Also, try not to sleep with your face on the pillow. The oil from your hair gets transferred onto your face and results in blemishes. African Beauty Hair Care FAQ's

1. What are black hair care products?

The structure of Afro Caribbean hair varies to Caucasian hair, the texture is much thicker with more kinks, and this gives black hair its unique characteristics. As a result, there are specific hair products available to Afro Caribbean hair or to people that have a similar hair structure.

2. What is a relaxer?

Hair relaxers are a term used within the black hair care beauty industry; it refers to a process of changing the chemical state therefore the look and feel of Afro Caribbean hair. Hair can either be relaxed so that it becomes straight or curly.

The basic process - hair relaxer is applied to the hair, left for the recommended time as per the instructions, a shampoo neutralizer is then applied to the hair to change the pH to zero or neutral, this causes the chemical to stop working. Hair is then shampooed and conditioned as normal. If hair is being relaxed for the very first time (un-relaxed/virgin hair) the chemical is applied to all of the hair. If the hair has been relaxed previously, the chemical is applied ONLY to the roots that have grown through (re-growth), this is called a 'retouch'.

Hair relaxing can be carried out in any hairdresser that provides a service for Afro Caribbean hair at a price! Alternatively, hair relaxers and neutralizers can be bought to use at home.

The Beauty Pot offer a huge range of relaxer kits - Care Free, At One with Nature, Dark and Lovely, Iman which includes a semi-permanent hair colour, plus many more. If you require a specific brand that is not featured on our online shop, contact us with your request.

There are three strengths of relaxers - mild, regular and super. Mild is for fine to medium hair thickness, for first time users, if you are unsure what strength to use and for very thick Caucasian hair. Super is for very coarse, thick hair, referred to sometimes as 'nappy' hair or thick afro hair. Regular strength is in-between these two. Not all relaxers have the 3 strengths available it depends on the brand.

3. What is the difference between a relaxer kit and a relaxer?

There are two relaxer products in the market - a relaxer kit and a relaxer. A relaxer kit comes in a pre-packaged box that contains all the products and instructions to help you; the second the relaxer creme that comes with instructions on the tub.

If you have not relaxed your hair before then you should opt for a relaxer kit which contains the relaxer, neutralizer plus other conditioning products. Relaxer kits are semi permanent, depending on how your hair takes to the product it can last between 2-6 months. With all relaxers if you go over the recommended time with the relaxer in your hair, your hair will break.

4. Are relaxer kits just for Afro Caribbean hair?

Products are made of chemicals formulated for hair that is African/Caribbean origin, these can be used by people of mixed cultures who may not have completely afro hair but do have slightly afro hair, however a milder version is suggested as the best product. Most of the relaxer should not be used on Caucasian hair as the chemicals will be too strong however there is one product that can be used for fine to medium thick hair - Elasta QP No Lye Conditioning Crème Relaxer Kit.

5. When can I relax my hair?

Virgin hair can be relaxed when you want to, however if your scalp is dry/irritable then it may be best to either buy a sensitive scalp relaxer such as Soft & Beautiful Botanicals Sensitive Scalp No-Lye hair relaxer or buy a serum or balm product for your hair and scalp before applying a relaxer. If you recently permed or relaxed your hair and think it may be damaged we suggest that you leave your hair for a while so that it gets stronger before you put more chemicals into it. If you have dry/damaged hair please view conditioners or the black hair food for products that will help revitalise your hair.

We recommend that a relaxer retouch application be performed every 6-8 weeks. However, the frequency depends on the texture and growth rate of your hair.

12. Why is it important to protect previously relaxed hair?

It is important to protect previously relaxed hair because once you have adequately relaxed any portion of the hair, it is then chemically processed hair. To expose hair to the relaxer again increases the chances of over processing and potential damage to the hair.

13. When can a relaxer be applied after a permanent hair colour has been used?

A relaxer should be applied no sooner than 2 weeks before or after a permanent hair colour application. Please follow the instructions carefully.

Yes. The selection of the appropriate relaxer strength is very important. It is essential that the correct relaxer strength be selected. Please refer to the product's instruction sheet carefully to avoid hair breakage or hair loss.

15. Can I replace the shampoo in the relaxer system with any shampoo?

No, the shampoo provided in the relaxer kits has a specific and special function to ensure that all the relaxer is completely removed. Rinse the hair properly before shampooing. This step is very important and failure to do so can result in hair breakage.

No, do not use any products that are not included in the relaxer system. The products are formulated to work systematically.

No. Apply the relaxer to the new growth only. Please perform a strand test and refer to the recommended timing chart on the instruction sheet to avoid over processing.

Please see ‘Dump the hat – combat dandruff and dry scalp’ section.

Tips for: Black Hair Care

  • Look for Afro products that containing natural moisturisers such as jojoba oil & cocoa butter.
  • Well moisturised hair will prevent breakage.
  • When braids or weaves are removed, allow afro hair to rest first before relaxing the hair.
  • Essential - trimming between straightening treatments.

24. When should I wash my hair and deep condition it?

Black Hair care often requires extra care and attention, because Afro Caribbean hair is the only hair to vary in diameter plus the intensity of the curls/kinks makes it the weakest hair. Afro hair textures range from coarse and dry to baby soft which are both susceptible to damage.

Washing Afro hair every 7 to 10 days is adequate, over shampooing will strip the afro hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle.

Even if Black African American hair is not being subjected to chemical processes or blow-drying, it needs to be treated. Use a deep-conditioning treatment, such as Africa's Best Organics Hair Mayonnaise, once a week, depending on the length and condition of African hair.

African Beauty Skin Care FAQ's

1. Why has my skin tone become irregular?

Black skin (people from Africa, Native Australians, African-Americans, Caribbean's, Other Islands) is darker than northern European skin because of the increased amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment in the skin and protects the skin from sunlight. This keeps black African American people looking younger. The melanin pigment in the skin protects the black skin from sunlight and slows down the aging process.

As black people age, their skin often becomes irregularly pigmented. This shows up as dark patches on the skin. Irregular pigmentation can sometimes be caused by inflammation.

If an area of the skin becomes inflamed or red from an insect bite or from an acne pimple, a brown area can be left behind as the redness or inflammation subsides. A product to reduce the dark spots is Pharmaclinix Women's Lightenex Cream.

5. I change my hair tint every few months, my hair it's not as soft and silky as it was.

Tints may be the in-thing but they have the potential to cause great damage. They break hair protein, resulting in dry and weak hair. Rest your hair between changing hair tints. Compensate the harsh chemicals using regular treatment with a good coconut hair oil. Use a natural shampoo with henna, shikakai and green almonds which gently cleans and conditions your hair.

6. My hair always looks greasy, even though I wash them regularly. What should I do?

Every time you touch your hair you might be transferring oil and dirt from your fingers. Also, using strong shampoos disturbs the pH balance of your hair and damages them. Wash your hair regularly with a gentle shampoo, containing natural ingredients such as green almonds, shikakai and henna.

East Asian Beauty Hair Care FAQ's

1. Do you have any tips on styling or colouring my hair?

East Asian hair is different from Caucasian hair in that it absorbs and retains moisture more quickly. It’s heavier and doesn’t move as easily. It is essential to keep these factors in mind while working out a hairstyle on East Asian hair. Ensure that your hair colorist or stylist is familiar with working on East Asian hair.

Chemical Treatments: Thick hair tends to absorb dyes and color rather quickly but is resistant to bleaching. Perms and hair colors may need to be customized so as to avoid frizzy or burnt hair. When planning an East Asian hairstyle, work on the thinning out the middle since there is usually plenty of volume, even with straight hair.

2. What can I do to stop my hair splitting and breaking?

East Asian hair is typified as being straight. Fibers are usually longer in length and are more round in cross section. Due to this configuration, there is a tendency for East Asian hair to tangle and break. It is a preference of hair care in Asia for women to keep their hair long; therefore the hair is exposed for extremely long periods to extensive combing, brushing, as well as pinning, clamping and twisting.

Damage such as split ends, can be made worse by chemical treatments. KEY REQUIREMENTS for Asia hair care - a product that provides shine and high conditioning at the tip of the hair such as Dabur Vatika Nourishing Cream Shampoo.

3. How can I make my curls more defined?

Everyone can have voluminous, fun curls by using the following tips:

Style Tip - this style works on curly, straight or relaxed hair. Take long hair in small sections at night and detangle them with fingers. Then twist and coil the sections, pinning them close to the head. In the morning, you'll have volumes of beautiful hair.

East Asian Beauty Skin Care FAQ's

1. I have increasingly been getting dark spots on my face, why?

While other women consider wrinkles to be the first signs of aging, East Asian skin signals the passing years with the onset of dark spots. Excessive freckling, hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone all indicate that time marches on. Combat East Asian Skin blemishes by using Yoko whitening hand & body cream or ianti luxe jewelry care arbutin whitening lotion.

This means that proper sun protection is essential, since this condition is worsened by UV exposure, ianti luxe jewelry sun block cream SPF31 is made specifically for East Asian women to protect skin against UV rays.

2. How can I combat acne?

Common skin care additives like preservatives and fragrances can be highly irritating to East Asian skin. Unfortunately, these ingredients are found in many major cosmetic brands, making them unsuitable for delicate skin types.

East Asian skin is highly prone to blemishes and acne. These conditions are often a result of using skin care products that are too oily or waxy. To combat acne use East Asian skin care product Yoko Acne-Melasma Cream Herbal Formula.

East Asian skin tends to have larger pores, which can impart the appearance of uneven tone and texture. Daily exfoliation will minimise pore appearance and help this skin look smooth and healthy - East Asian skin care products that help exfoliate are ianti luxe jewelry cleansing cream and ianti luxe jewelry honey scrub foam.

3. What products can I use to keep my hair healthy and shiny looking?

The treatment and maintenance of your hair at home is very important.

Short Hair – Contrary to what everyone believes, short hair really needs hydration. Even if you cut your hair monthly, generally the continued use of a hair dryer, to give short hair a perfect look, dries out hair. Tip: always apply a small quantity of the Amazonutry Nutri Replenishing Leave-In Conditioner.

Fine hair – this hair type generally has dry roots and needs hydration. Try to hydrate with keratin products and always use the Amazonutry Nutri Replenishing Leave-In Conditioner. Tip: avoid combing your fingers through your hair. The sweat on your hands will dry out the strands.

Colour-treated hair - this hair type needs the most attention to stay beautiful. Hair care starts with the right Amazonutry Nutri Replenishing Shampoo. You have to wash your hair with the proper shampoo for color-treated hair. To leave hair healthy, apply the Amazonutry Nutri-Replenishing Mask once a week and wash it off completely. Tip: use the leave-in as a color protector before using a hair dryer.

Latina Beauty Skin Care FAQ's

1. Why do I get acne after using certain skin products?

Latina skin contains a high concentration of ceramides. General market products often contain greasy moisturizing ingredients, which can overload the skin and cause acneic breakouts. Products need to contain non-greasy moisturizers, including Jojoba extract, which increase the suppleness and silky feel without overloading the Latina skin.

2. Why does my skin become irritated when using certain moisturising skin products?

Because Latina skin contains high concentrations of sebum, it is prone to irritation from common moisturizing ingredients. This irritation causes inflammation, bumps and uneven textures and even itchiness. Products need to contain natural anti-inflammatory ingredients such as chamomile and aloe vera extracts to sooth the skin and prevent breakouts.
